Lives in Houston, Texas
Verónica Gaona is a multidisciplinary artist from Brownsville, Texas, the southernmost American city on the US–Mexico border. Now living and working in Houston, Gaona’s practice is informed by her transnational identity and sociopolitical climate. She investigates notions of architecture and migration using the material residue of death and trokiando aesthetics. Considering the voices of displaced and exploited communities, Gaona materializes characteristics of diaspora such as opacity, transnationality, and impermanence to redress traditional approaches to memorialization and subvert power structures. Her artwork exists at the intersection of installation, performance, digital media, and sculpture, bringing labor and spatial issues to the foreground.
