In 2019, Presa House Gallery initiated a groundbreaking exhibition titled “Intersections,” which brought together six Texas curators to spotlight the work of women artists from their respective cities. As the curator for Houston, I witnessed firsthand the rich tapestry of artistic expression that defines our vibrant community. Fast forward to 2023, when Big Medium invited me to curate a show of Houston artists for the Austin Studio Tours, and the concept of “Crossroads” emerged; a title symbolizing the potential for connection and collaboration between two dynamic Texas cities: Houston and Austin.
Today, I am thrilled to present “I-10,” an exhibition that builds upon the spirit of “Crossroads.” This show aims to further bridge the artistic landscapes of Houston and San Antonio, two cities often mentioned in the same breath when discussing Texas art. Both cities have demonstrated a steadfast commitment to nurturing artists through public funding, grants, and a community of collectors who champion their work. This supportive infrastructure allows artists to not only thrive but to also engage deeply with their communities, fostering collaborations, academic pursuits, and innovative projects.
In “I-10,” we explore how the artists selected from Houston draw inspiration from their surroundings—be it through the use of local materials, the documentation of their neighborhoods, or their active involvement with Houston’s art nonprofits. The diverse cultures and rich histories of both cities fuel their creativity, resulting in work that resonates deeply with a wide audience. By showcasing Houston artists in San Antonio, we not only highlight their individual talents but also celebrate the shared experiences and narratives that connect these two urban centers.
The artists featured in this exhibition have each carved a unique space within the Houston art community, yet their work transcends geographic boundaries. Through their art, they engage with themes of identity, history, and the communal experience, inviting viewers to reflect on their own connections to place. As these artists share their stories, they also extend an invitation to San Antonio’s vibrant community to engage, participate, and interact with their work.
“I-10” is not just an exhibition; it is a testament to the power of artistic collaboration and the potential that emerges when cities come together to support their artists. I invite you to explore this collection and to witness the incredible possibilities that arise when artists feel free to express themselves in a supportive environment. Together, we can celebrate the rich cultural landscape of Texas and the artists who continue to shape it.
