Vicente Telles is a renowned Santero and cultural iconographer from Alquerque, New Mexico. Telles began his artistic journey painting traditional retablos using handmade pigments and gesso. Over time, his style expanded and evolved to include a variety of mediums, such as textiles, hand-pulled papers, and found and repurposed materials. His work often blends traditional and reinterpreted Catholic and cultural iconography with contemporary social commentary, exploring themes like border culture. Through his art, Telles aims to honor and preserve his cultural heritage by observing, learning, teaching, and pushing the boundaries of traditional Santero art to contemporary forms.
